Teen Workers
Teenage workers can be an asset to the  workforce. Gainful employment for teens will help them develop a work ethic that will last a lifetime.

However, on the job injuries can also have a lifelong impact. Often a profoundly negative one.

According to The National Institute of Occupational Safety & Health (NIOSH) about 70 teens die at work and about 77,000 teens are injured seriously enough to require hospital emergency treatment every year.

Two Federal laws and a number of State regulations apply to adolescent workers.

The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and the Occupational Safety & Health Act (OSHA), Colorado also has child labor laws.  Employers must comply with all the laws that apply and if Federal and State   standards differ, the rule that provides the most protection will apply.

Common warehouse equipment that employees under age 18 can not operate are:
Forklifts
Power Driven Cranes & Hoists
Freight Elevators

OSHA requires that employers provide a safe and healthful work environment for all employees but the standards for workers under age 18 are even stricter.

The type of Behavior Based Safety Training offered by Materials Handling Equipment Company will help employers ensure that all workers, but especially adolescents recognize hazards and are.

The maintenance programs offered by MHECO for forklifts, hoists, dock equipment and conveyors will provide documentation if something happens and at the same time help avoid the unthinkable.
