BEHAVIOR BASED SAFETY ISSUE NO. 2

Materials Handling Equipment Company has developed a National reputation as a leader in Behavior-Based Safety Training.

But what is Behavior Based Safety?

First of all, there are no OSHA regulations for behavior-based safety training.
Behavior-based safety is a non-traditional approach to decreasing the occurrence of injuries in the workplace by the use of education and self motivation.

In the past, most companies have focused on process (Rules) to increase safety. They did this largely because complying with OSHA regulations required and still requires this type of approach but OSHA does not prevent any other approach to achieving the goal of safety.

Traditional, classroom based safety training is largely based on lectures and tests.  Behavior based safety training focuses on worker behavior to reduce the occurrence of accidents and injuries.  The rules are covered but the skills that rules are based on are stressed through education.

The American Society of Safety Engineers has stated for a long time, that a large percentage of accidents are caused by unsafe acts.  Acts that in one way or another violate OSHA rules, but the root cause of the rule violations are ignored at most work places due to a lack of education in safe skills.

It only seem logical that focusing on preventing unsafe acts (Behaviors) can lead to a reduction in injuries and increase in safety and productivity.

Generally, behavior-based approaches to safety consist of the following elements:

   Employee/Management Involvement

   Hazardous Behavior Identification

   Observation/Feedback

   Culture Change
